<p>Hypothyroidism affects millions of people all over the world and in addition there are numerous people who are not aware that they actually have a disorder and simply put the way they feel down to how old they are or another reason. <p>There is in fact more in common between the disciplines of osteopathy and chiropractic treatments than there are differences, but there is a key difference in how both view health issues.</p>
<p>Osteopaths view the body as a whole system, and will look at all aspects of a person&#8217;s physical health, not just the immediate injury or cause of discomfort. The reasoning is that all parts of the body are connected and inter-related and that keeping the whole system in good order allows localised injuries and conditions to be healed more effectively, and that on-going conditions, such as back pain and muscular aches, will benefit from better skeletal alignment, circulation and coordinated natural movement. In this way an osteopath will also treat conditions that are not directly related to the skeleton. Manipulation of the joints and skeleton, and massage of surrounding soft tissues to alleviate aches and pains, and this in turn promotes the circulation of fluids around the body through the circulatory and lymphatic systems. This then allows natural healing to take place throughout the body.</p>
<p>Chiropractors have a similar outlook, but focus on the spine and associated muscular systems, maintaining that as the spine carries the spinal cord and is the axis of all other movement in the body, good spinal health and operation will alleviate all areas of the body. So by making the back the focus of their treatments, chiropractors are also able to address issues throughout the body. But this focus does limit the purview to skeletal and muscular disorders.</p>
<p>From a patients point of view this is often where the distinction ends. The treatments both disciplines use are similar, and in many cases are the same. The actual manipulation techniques may vary slightly, but if a patient was looking for relief from long term lumbar pain in their backs, they would be hard pressed to tell the difference should they try treatment form both an osteopath and a chiropractor.</p>
<p>The reason for the similarity in the disciplines is historical. Both were founded in the Midwest of the USA in the 19th centuries by medical men who were wholly dissatisfied with the accepted medical treatments of the day, and who were looking for what we now consider an &#8220;holistic&#8221; approach to treating patients. Osteopathy was developed by Dr Andrew Taylor around 1872, and the Chiropractic system then followed in 1895 in the hands of Dr Daniel David Palmer. Palmer is reported as being a student of Still&#8217;s, hence the similarity in treatments and approach, but this assertion is disputed by Palmer himself and the two had many heated debates about their treatments when they met at various camps in Iowa.</p>
<p>This holistic approach has gained much support from the conventional medical establishment over the last thirty years, where it is recognised that drug treatments and their side effects can cause as many problems as they fix. Both osteopathy and chiropractic treatments in the UK are drug free and so have no side effects while showing excellent therapeutic results for a whole range of conditions. They also address lifestyle, diet and the benefits of preventative medicine, which is something mainstream medicine often lacks the resources to promote as much as it would like, and so looks to the long term health of its patients rather than just dealing with the current condition.</p>

<p>Cancer is the disease that causes the most fear, because nobody can feel safe. The most common cancers in women are breast (30%), cervical (12%) and ovaries (4%). More than anything, these cancers may be prevented through regular screening and some lifestyle tips.</p>
<p>In an Ifop survey published in Western France in November 2000, the cancer appeared as the disease feared most. It is cited in head in 63% of cases, far ahead of AIDS (39%), cardiovascular diseases (26%), (28%) Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, the disease of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (23%) and meningitis (11%). The fear of cancer appears homogeneous, regardless of the age group or sex. Everyone feels potentially concerned. Thus, it appears today useful to recall some prevention tips.</p>
<p>The importance of screening<br />
For most cancers of women, the importance of screening is crucial. More cancer is detected early, more the chances of cure are high. Thanks to mammographic screening, 50% of breast cancers are detected in the early stages of evolution while the tumor is less than 2 cm. In addition to an increase in the chances of recovery, this early diagnosis allows a use less aggressive treatments.
